The Happy Power ESS installation includes at least one Happy Power ESS battery and Inverter, and standard electrical hardware as required by your particular installation and local electrical codes.
When configured in the 15 or 20 kWh configuration, the Happy Power ESS battery enclosures can be mounted as single side-by-side units on a wall, or on the floor. When mounted side-by-side on a wall, Happy Power ESS units must have sufficient clearance on each side for electrical connections and proper ventilation.
The Happy Power ESS is rated for indoor and outdoor installation, and can operate within a wide range of temperatures, from -20°C to 55°C (-4°F to 131°F). At the high and low ends of this temperature range, the Happy Power ESS will limit charge or discharge power based on battery cell temperature to improve battery lifespan. To optimize performance, avoid installing the Happy Power ESS in locations exposed to direct sunlight or subject to sustained high or low temperatures. However, we recommend that the Happy Power ESS be installed in a temperature-controlled climate such as a garage or a basement for optimal performance and lifetime.
While humidity and rain do not pose a risk, the Happy Power ESS should not be installed in locations subject to flooding or near water sources such as downspouts, faucets or sprinkler systems. In order to maintain proper ventilation, the Happy Power ESS should be kept clear of debris such as leaves and dense brush, and of accumulated snow.
The Happy Power ESS does not currently have the ability to work with existing battery systems.
In the event of a utility power outage, the Happy Power ESS immediately disconnects the home’s critical load electrical system from the utility and restores power to the home. Whereas a traditional solar system typically shuts down during a grid outage to prevent any power from going back into the grid, because the Happy Power ESS manages the grid connection, solar can continue to operate. The Happy Power ESS is able to coordinate its charge and discharge based on home usage and solar production while curtailing solar production when necessary.
In Self-Supply mode, the Happy Power ESS charges from the excess solar energy generated during the day, and discharges to power your home at night.
When solar is producing more power than the home is using, the Happy Power ESS captures and stores that energy. When the home is consuming more energy than solar is providing, the Happy Power ESS discharges enough energy to offset the home usage. If solar is producing more than the Happy Power ESS can store, or the home needs more than the Happy Power ESS can provide, the remainder can be exported or imported from the grid respectively.
The Happy Power ESS is able to store solar energy when rates are lower, and discharge that energy to offset the home’s usage when rates are higher. The Happy Power ESS prioritizes charging from solar energy instead of the grid in order to meet the requirements outlined by government. Using the Happy Power mobile or web-based app, homeowners are able to customize a charge/discharge schedule based on the utility’s Time-of-Use rate plan.
As long as the Happy Power ESS is connected to the Internet, homeowners can use the Happy Power mobile app to monitor home energy system in real time and view energy usage history. During a grid outage, Internet is often still available with the Happy Power ESS and homeowners are able to view the Happy Power ESS’s status. If the Internet connection is lost, the Happy Power ESS will continue to operate with its most recent settings, but will not be able to monitor operation or change settings until connectivity is restored.
Yes, the Happy Power ESS can charge from the grid. However, if the Happy Power ESS is charged from the grid instead of solar, it will negate the ability to receive the Federal Investment Tax Credit, which is a 30% credit. When Happy Power ESS’s state of charge is below its backup reserve or when it is in Backup-only mode, it can charge from the grid.
Yes, the Happy Power ESS can provide stored solar energy to an EV through your home electrical panel. However, there is no direct connection between the Happy Power ESS and the EV wall connector. It is not recommended that an EV charger be connected to the critical load panel, either.
An average home uses approximately 20 kWh of energy per day. A small home may use as little as 10 kWh and a large home may use 40 kWh or more per day. The Happy Power ESS, at its base level, provides 10 kWh of energy for backup power and can be scaled to 20 kWh. You can use the Happy Power mobile app to monitor usage and conserve power to extend backup coverage for a day or more. Additionally, when the Happy Power ESS is paired with solar it can continue to recharge and has the potential to run your home indefinitely.
The Happy Power ESS can detect an outage, disconnect from the grid and bring power back to your home in a fraction of a second. Lights may flicker, but digital clocks should not reset. Unlike backup generators, the Happy Power ESS can keep your appliances running without interruption.
The best way to extend your usage of the Happy Power ESS during an outage is to limit the energy consumption of your home. You can do this by monitoring your use of non-essential or energy-hungry appliances like air conditioners, plasma TVs, hairdryers, and hot tubs.
If you exceed the Happy Power ESS’s power (5 kW each) or energy (10 kWh each) capabilities, it will safely shut down similar to your home circuit breaker. We’ve taken precautions to make sure this does not happen by working closely with our installer network to ensure that the Happy Power ESS is not overloaded when installing the system. If energy is depleted, and the grid has not yet returned, the Happy Power ESS will automatically restart when the sun begins to rise the next day.
The Happy Power app is available on the iTunes and Google Play stores. You can download the Happy Power mobile app from your regular app store on your device. Please visit our YouTube channel for additional support videos and be sure to subscribe to stay up-to-date with our latest releases.

Why is the Happy Power ESS not charging?
When installed with PV, the Happy Power ESS is designed to charge from solar energy. If the solar system is not yet operational, the Happy Power ESS will not be able to charge. If the solar system is operational and the system is in ‘Self-Supply’ Mode, the Happy Power ESS will charge with any excess solar that your home doesn’t immediately use. Smaller solar systems sometimes do not produce more than what the home is currently using.
Power flow shows the instantaneous flow of power of the home’s energy system. On a typical day a combination of solar, grid, and the Happy Power ESS may be powering the home’s loads. Solar energy may flow to the grid when the home loads do not need it and the Happy Power ESS is full. When charging the Happy Power ESS to its backup reserve level or in ‘Backup’ Mode, solar power will flow directly from solar to the Happy Power ESS while grid energy is drawn for the home.
